Sharon & Gene Ross

Sharon and I came to Virginia Beach 20 years ago with not knowing a soul - Jewish or otherwise. One of the first - and definitely the best decision we made was to enroll Kathleen and Matt (then 2 and 4 years old) into the JCC pre-school. Even though it was a 30-minute drive the pre-school director (Beth Kinnear) was so welcoming that we knew it was the best place for our children. Soon our friendships within the Jewish Community grew and led us into joining Ohef Sholom Temple. Even though she was not Jewish, Sharon became involved at the JCC as well as at the Temple. With encouragement and gentle prodding from Laura Gross: "there is very little to do…, just show up” - I agreed to become a member of the JCC Board. Somehow word got out about my CPA and finance backgrounds and before I knew it I was Treasurer and then President of the JCC. Probably my most rewarding involvement came with the campus move to Witchduck where I was responsible for negotiating the financing with Bank of America. Both kids became a B'nai Mitzvah and were confirmed and they renewed their pre-school connections with BBYO. Sharon continues her involvement with the Temple with such endeavors as organizing NEST, Mitzvah Day and the Caring Committee. I have continued to be periodically involved with community Boards of Director when called upon. Without a doubt our connections to our religion and the Jewish community were born from the openness in which the community welcomed us.
